Botany

The works in this series explore the hidden nature of botany. These cross sections of the earth expose a concealed world that helps to generate what we encounter on the surface. In these pieces, layers of color, texture and paper cradle imaginary root systems that express themselves in the form of stems, leaves and petals.

Our first impression of the world and one another is based on hints from the outside. The flora that form on the surface, or the personality that each of us exhibits, is born from a complex set of unseen interactions that often go unnoticed. These works are an attempt to both expose and understand the relationship between these two sides of reality.

Life Forms
May 2006

This series of paintings explores the similarities between the design of simple life forms and the intricate detail found in traditional women’s work. The inspiration for these works derives from science books and microscopic images; various kinds of stitches, knots and patterns, as well as the forms and colors that emerge in spring.

These paintings are individual worlds contained by the size of the canvas. Layers of colors, lines, and textures form as a result of premeditations, intuition, and chance. Each of these layers has an impact on the final piece, similar to the way in which our accumulated memories and experiences contribute to our character.
